Mission Statement:
“Using the PAST to Move Forward” is a multi-partner collaborative effort with goals of locating, providing access to, and teaching a deeper understanding of the meaning and use of historical records in Maine. “Using the PAST to Move Forward,” we recognize that teaching about the past efficiently and effectively demands the use of the technology of the future.
Background:
This effort commits to spotlight Maine’s involvement in the Civil War over the course of war’s upcoming sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) commemoration. The PAST further aims to provide a framework for the study of history and primary source documents that is valuable to students, teachers, communities, and citizens interested in all periods of history. The PAST brings together historical, educational, and technological resources from across the state to (i) Educate local repositories about how to preserve their collections and expand both tangible and virtual access to them, (ii) Design and provide teacher professional development to educators access and teach with primary source documents , and (iii) Promote purposeful partnerships within local communities.
Projects:
The PAST has reached out to historical societies, libraries, teachers, students, and other cultural and educational entities to solicit input for projects.
Projects include: · Providing professional development for teachers surrounding the use of technology and primary source documents in classrooms. o Fall Conference 2010, to be available in multiple locations in real time and recorded for later viewing o Webinars · Helping historical societies to assess, preserve, and make available local historical records. o Distribute guidelines for scanning, naming, preservation that are compatible with the MHS guidelines for MMN o Find and inform historical societies about relevant local and national grant opportunities o Training sessions for collections management (PD for history professionals) o Distribute information on intellectual property issues o Communal calendar, printed and online o Google map of holdings, monuments, cemeteries, Underground RR sites · Facilitating relationships between schools, historical societies, and libraries. o Provide libraries with records of historical society holdings o County-wide listserves, mailing lists, etc for communication between libraries and historical societies in a given area. o Provide schools with contact information for local history repositories o Publicize excellent models for collaboration: MCHP, local internship programs, etc o Create a promotional website
